A shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, killed at least four people and injured at least 30 on Wednesday, CNN reported citing sources. The suspect is in custody. While the victims are being treated at a nearby hospital, chilling messages from a student to his mother were revealed. The boy, Ethan, admitted that he was “scared” when a shooter opened fire at the Barrow County school.

Erin Clark revealed the text message she received from her son at 10:20 a.m., shortly before police officers arrived at the scene. The boy wrote: “School shooting right now. I’m scared. I’m not joking.”

His mother replied saying she was leaving work. In a heartbreaking response, Ethan wrote: “I love you.”

“I love you too, baby. Where are you?” Clark said. Her son told her he was in class and “someone had died.”

Erin Clark later revealed that Ethan is a senior at the high school. She works at the Amazon warehouse. With the main road blocked to the school, Clark parked and ran with other parents. The parents were then directed to the football field. Amidst the chaos, Clark found Ethan sitting in the bleachers.

Clark said her son was writing an essay in class when he first heard the gunshots. Her son then worked with his classmates to block the door and hide.

“I’m very proud of him for doing it,” she said. “He was very brave.”

The students had started the school year just over a month before Wednesday’s shooting.

“I’m scared to send him back,” she said. “I don’t know what I’m going to do.”
