Actually, the government is planning to increase the insurance cover from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (Ayushman Bharat Yojana). Apart from this, this cover for women is likely to be up to Rs 15 lakh. Not only this, there is also a plan to increase four lakh beds in private hospitals under this scheme (Ayushman Bharat Yojana).

Target to increase number of beneficiaries to 100 crore.

A report in The Indian Express said that in the third term of the NDA government, the Union Health Ministry aims to increase the number of beneficiaries from 55 crore to 100 crore. A group of government officials (GoS) has been working to set targets for the next five years and the timeline for their achievement. A list of important action points is provided in the report of this group. The group, comprising nine ministries including health, AYUSH, sports, culture and education, is expected to make a presentation to the Cabinet Secretary soon.

12.34 million families receive benefits

Ayushman Bharat Yojana, also known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). The scheme covers around 55 crore beneficiaries, which is 40 per cent of the total population. As per the new proposal, the insurance cover will be increased to Rs 10 lakh per family and in case of specific diseases, the cover can be increased to Rs 15 lakh for women. Along with this, a target has been set to increase the number of beneficiaries from 55 crore to 100 crore.

Promise to provide benefits to all citizens over 70 years of age

The BJP sees this scheme as one of the success stories of the NDA government. The party manifesto for this year’s Lok Sabha elections also promises to extend this benefit to all citizens above the age of 70 years. Several groups of secretaries have been tasked with outlining the objectives of the BJP’s ‘Sankalp Patra’ and mapping out an election timeline for it.

Planning to increase four lakh beds

According to government data, around 49% of those getting Ayushman cards are women and around 48% of those getting approval for hospitalisation are also women. These figures were released by the Health Ministry late last year. Apart from this, private hospital beds will be gradually increased by 4 lakh. At present, there are around 7.22 lakh private hospital beds under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. The ministry has set a target of increasing them to 9.32 lakh by 2026-27 and to 11.12 lakh by 2028-29.
